Three leading experts highlighted current advances in bladder cancer care and research during the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network’s (BCAN’s) Leadership Summit from October 14-15th in Rockville, MD.

Gary Steinberg, MD, FACS, of the University of Chicago moderated the discussion amongst the three panelists who also included Andrea Apolo, MD from the NCI, and David McConkey, MD, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute.  The main focus was on muscle invasive and metastatic bladder cancer.

On Monday the White House released a briefing on Federal and private sector initiatives meant to fast-track breakthroughs in cancer treatment. The initiatives were approved by the official Cancer Moonshot Task Force, led by US Vice President, Joe Biden.

Every two years during our Biennial Metastasis Research Congress, the MRS promotes excellence in metastasis research through the presentation of three prestigious awards.  The 16th Biennial Metastasis Research Congress (MRS2016) was held in Chengdu, China from September 16th-20th.  During this congress the following 3 researchers were recognized for their outstanding contributions to metastasis research, and presented their work.

Months or even 10-plus years after a patient has been declared cancer-free, a tumor can reappear at its primary (original) site or show up in secondary sites through a process known as metastasis.  How can this be, and what can we do?  Answers may be found by characterizing the presence of minimal residual disease (MRD) after a patient has undergone tumor resection and/or drug treatment.
